Community Consultation Outcomes

Preparation of the Tallawarra Lands Local Environmental Study has involved consultation with a number of government agencies, stakeholders and community members. The outcomes of theses consultations are summarised below.

Public Authorities

Consultation with public authorities focused on obtaining strategic information on a range of issues affecting the Tallawarra land site. Consultations took place with:

  • NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet
  • NSW Department of Planning
  • NSW Department of Environment and Conservation
  • NSW Roads and Traffic Authority
  • NSW Rural Fire Services
  • NSW Department of Natural Resources
  • NSW Department of State and Regional Development
  • Lake Illawarra Authority

  • Integral Energy
  • Wollongong City Council
  • Shellharbour City Council

Key issues that were considered at these meetings included issues such as:

Natural environment

  • threatened species
  • bushfire hazard reduction
  • preservation and enhancement of the Yallah-Calderwood corridor
  • preservation of Aboriginal archeological sites and cultural places
  • Lake Illawarra water quality
  • impacts to Lake Illawarra authority foreshore lands
  • flood prone land

Built environment

  • employment lands, specifically large lot employment land
  • road access provision of public transport services to the site
  • stack emissions from power station
  • acoustic impact of power station
  • sewerage and water connections, residential electricity connections
  • potential contamination
  • visibility of the site from the Shellharbour city centre

Community

  • demographic analysis
  • recreational access around the foreshore
  • vision and objectives for Tallawarra Lands

Assisted with feedback from the Community Liaison Group, TRUenergy has developed a vision for the development of Tallawarra Lands. These are the principles of the vision:

  • Accessible open spaces that focus on the connection with the lake, and provide for a range of recreational needs.
  • Leading practice sustainability initiatives that enhance the natural and urban environment.
  • Provide opportunities to appreciate and learn more about the environmental qualities of the site.
  • A quality residential component that capitalises upon the complements the unique scenic and environmental qualities of the site.
  • Integrated and innovative development that creates shared benefits, and allows diverse, yet complementary uses.
  • Creation of a significant regional amenity.
  • Engagement processes that create a high level of community acceptance and ownership over project outcomes.
  • A project that returns value to TRUenergy and enhances the company’s corporate reputation.
