Electrical Safety: Avoiding Electric Shock
Be sure appliance cords are in good condition and promptly repair worn or frayed cords. Extend their life by pulling the plug, rather than the cord to remove it from the outlet.
- Be particularly careful using a hairdryer - it can electrocute you if it falls into water while connected.
- Avoid piggyback connections. Overloading can occur if too many cords are connected to outlets designed for only one or two plugs.
- Use childproof plugs in electrical outlets to deter children from poking.
- Call an electrician if you need electrical wiring or repair, no matter how minor the job.
- Have safety switches installed at your meter box.
- Always be aware of where powerlines are when installing and antenna, using a ladder or picking fruit/prunning trees to avoid inadvertently coming into contact with overhead lines.
- Know the location of any underground powerlines before digging in the yard.
