Stony Gap Wind Farm

TRUenergy is proposing to build a 123MW wind farm at Stony Gap which will be capable of meeting the energy needs of 51,650 households each year and reduce greenhouse gases by 280,000 tonnes annually.

The site will be located approximately 5km south of the town of Burra. The site is located on two parallel ridgelines of the Tothill Ranges running north to south (view map). The wind farm will be located on cleared land, minimising the environmental impact caused by clearing or disturbing native vegetation.

The proposed Stony Gap wind farm will provide significant social and economic benefits for the Mid North community as well as providing a source of clean energy for South Australia.

The construction and operation of the Stony Gap wind farm is expected to inject $15.5 million into the local economy over a four year period, provide job opportunities and support local businesses as our service providers.

What will it look like?

The proposed Stony Gap wind farm will consist of:

  • 41 wind turbine generators installed on towers up to 85 metres high
  • three permanent 80 metre high wind monitoring masts
  • an onsite electrical substation (approx 80 metres x 50 metres) and control room
  • a network of internal roads linking turbines and the control room
  • a series of 33kV electrical cables linking turbines to the onsite substation
  • approximately 25 kilometres of single circuit 275kV overhead transmission lines linking the wind farm to the Robertstown substation, which will also be expanded.
