Energy Efficiency Tips
We've put together a list of big changes that you can make around the home to reduce your energy consumption. These changes could take time but offer longer term solutions to reducing your energy usage. Simply select a room to see the ideas.

- Next time you purchase furniture consider purchasing light furnishings as it makes the room easier to light.
- Reduce the number of down lights installed to reduce the amount of energy required to light a room. Down lights that are recessed into the ceiling may also reduce the insulation in your ceiling and make it harder to heat or cool the room.
- Make sure your oven, fridge and freezer are working effectively by checking that their seals are fitted properly. The seals should hold a piece of paper in place when the appliance doors are closed.
- Buy a dishwasher that has options such as rinse only, economy cycles and washing with cold water.
- Defrost and clean your fridge regularly, including the coils behind your fridge.
- Buy a front loader washing machine as they are more energy efficient than top loaders.
- Make sure you buy a washing machine and clothes dryer that are appropriate for your household size and needs.
- When buying a washing machine, make sure that you can change the amount of time and water required to wash your clothes.
- Minimise heat losses by making sure hot water pipes and tanks are insulated.
- Turn your gas hot water service on to vacation mode if you're away for a few days.
- Switch from electric to gas hot water to reduce the amount of energy you use.
- By converting to a solar hot water system you could save money on your energy bill.
- Always keep the temperature of your swimming pool below 27°C.
- Use a timer to operate the filter pump and reduce its running time. Your pool supplier should be able to advise you on what the optimal running time is for your pool pump.
- Use a cover or blanket on pools and spa pools when not in use.
- To avoid losing heat in your home, check that your ceiling, external walls and floors are sufficiently insulated.
- Choosing the right curtains and outside window coverings will create a consistent temperature inside your home and help reduce your power bills.
- Check that your ducts are properly sealed to increase the effectiveness of your heating and cooling systems.
- If renovating, consider double glazing on your windows to reduce the amount of heat lost.
